EVLT Endovenous Laser Treatment For Medical & Cosmetic Vein Problem
EVLT is a quick, minimally invasive laser treatment that effectively treats varicose veins.
Varicose veins are a medical condition, not simply a cosmetic problem. They are often a sign of a more serious vein problem known as “venous reflux”. Venous reflux can not only cause varicose veins, but swelling, aching, heaviness, discoloration, and skin breakdown of the legs. If not treated this condition can lead to weeping wounds and ulcerations. As a medical condition, most insurance plans and Medicare cover the treatment of diagnosed varicose veins.
During EVLT, a small laser fiber is inserted through a needle into the varicose vein using ultrasound guidance. The laser is activated and, as the optic fiber is removed from the vein, it heats and closes the vein. Once the vein is closed, the blood that was circulating through the vein is naturally re-routed to other healthy veins. Over time, the closed vein is absorbed by the body.
During the procedure, an anesthetic will be administered along the course of the vein so that the patient will not experience much pain, and a cooling technique is used to ease any pain, generally described like a rubber band snap. The procedure takes an hour or less, and the patient is discharged immediately after the procedure. A designated driver must drive the patient home as the patient cannot drive for several hours after the procedure.
After EVLT, temporary bruising and darkening of the skin may result and will disappear in several days or weeks. Improvement can be seen immediately after the procedure is completed but it may take several months to see final results.
Patients will be able to walk and resume normal activities immediately after the procedure. Following the procedure, Dr. Coatti will prescribe compression stockings, which the patient will be asked to wear for two weeks. He will also prescribe mild exercise, such as walking. Some bruising is normal.
