What is PLDD?

 

Percutaneous Laser Disc Decompression is a progressive minimally invasive treatment for disc herniation

 

 

The principle of PLDD?

 

In this procedure, laser energy is transmitted through a thin optical fiber into the disc. The aim of PLDD is to vaporize a small portion of the inner core. The ablation of a relatively small volume of the inner core results in an important reduction of intra-discal pressure, thus inducing reduction of disc herniation.

 

Compare traditional spine surgery With PLDD?

 

In traditional open spine surgery, the surgeon will make a 5-6 inch incision down the back and moves the muscles to the side in order to properly see and operate on the spine. However, this technique often uses more anatomy than the surgeon actually requires and can have some serious drawbacks. One of the biggest issues is that the pulling back, or retraction, of the muscles can damage the soft tissue and lead to longer recovery times for patients.

 

Percutaneous Laser Disc Decompression ,minimally invasive spine surgery was designed to require a much smaller incision which, in turn, leads to less muscle damage, less bleeding, less time in the hospital and a shorter recovery period.

 

Patients get off the table with just a small adhesive bandage and return home for 24 hours of bed rest. Then patients begin progressive ambulation, walking up to a mile. Most return to work in four to five days.

Because only a thin needle is used, there is no cutting and no scarring. Since only a tiny amount of disc is vaporized, there is no subsequent spinal instability. PLDD is different from open lumbar disc surgery because there is no damage to the back muscle, no bone removal or large skin incision. Most of the complications that may occur with open surgery are eliminated with the PLDD procedure.
